MIXHIBIT
MIXHIBIT was a proposal by MOTOMOTO & UberEck for invite2innovate, a competition by the Deutsches Museum in Munich. It combined LED, transparent HoloGauze, 3D collection objects, moving image and sound.
I worked on an early interaction prototype: how could a gesture trigger a response that still made sense within this layered spatial setup?
the prototype
I started with Leap Motion, then moved to Kinect Azure for the prototype phase. The Kinect was available at the Deutsches Museum and made it possible to test the interaction at a larger scale.
The question stayed the same: how can an interaction leave the screen and still be easy to understand in space?
the interaction
Recognizing a clear swipe turned out to be less straightforward than it first seemed. A stable result needed a number of gates and rules: where a gesture could begin, which direction and speed counted, and when the system should ignore further input.
The TouchDesigner prototype made those decisions visible and adjustable.
the exhibit
For the final exhibit, the project returned to Leap Motion. In a confined and controlled interaction area, detection could be kept more focused and dependable.
I was no longer involved at that stage. The final Leap Motion and Unreal Engine implementation was developed by Sebastian Boyamba.
