BASSart Festival

the venue

BASSart 2014 was a two-day festival across the Postgaragen and Säulenhalle in Munich. Music, art, skating and moving image shared the program across several spaces and floors.

Rumpelmeier Soundsystem, UberEck and I were given one of those spaces to shape ourselves — including the visual environment and the artists playing there.

There was no real production budget. What we had instead was the freedom to build the room on our own terms.

the shape

This was my very first project using TouchDesigner.

The starting point was a simple geometry: pyramids. We built a physical pyramidal surface behind the DJ and mapped it audioreactively. It framed the projection area used by the VJs, while additional projected pyramids extended the built structure into the image.

The same shape also ran through the official BASSart teaser, produced by UberEck. When it played on the projection surface, the physical construction, the mapped layers and the animated pyramids came together in one space.

the night

The installation was only one part of the night. The room needed to work for the artists, the VJs and the people in front of it — most of them friends.
